About
I/O space is a social enterprise of the HackaDev National Youth Social Innovation Challenge which provides a physical space and an innovative curriculum for children to improve their English language communication skills in Jaffna.
Description
We have identified the challenge of children in Jaffna to communicate in the English language confidently and fluently. Based on their survey done with the engagement of a selected set of schools in Jaffna, we have found out that the major reason for the above challenge is the lack of platforms or spaces for the children to speak in English from their younger ages.
I/O Space was created as a solution to address the above issue, and it has introduced some effortless learning methods in a friendly classroom for children aged between 2 to 15 years. We focus on areas such as phonetic reading and writing, spell bee, sandwich technique, sessions with parents and kids, table talks, songs, recitation, storytelling and public speaking while the methods are customized to each group based on their learning capacity.
Co-Founders of I/O Space Mrs. Bavitha Umasuthan, Mr Sivashankar Sivaganeshamoorthy and Ms Minerva Jeyaraja started I/O Space in Nelliady, Jaffna with 6 students, which now has expanded to another branch in the town area of Jaffna reaching more than 200 students with a staff of four members. All the teachers at I/O Space are working on a part-time basis, where they have the opportunity to earn and train with a lot of learnings while completing their studies and reaching their dreams as well.
