Engage to Disengage (E2D) is a capacity-building programme on Critical Medial and Information Literacy for Youth in Sri Lanka which is developed by the HackaDev Academy of Learning and Skills under the partnership between UNESCO APCEIU and UNDP Sri Lanka.
The programme adopts a holistic intervention, considering every unit in the community such as the young individual, family, educational institute and society.
The programme enables discussions about current information and learning environments, required competencies to cope with the changing environments, theories on CMIL, understanding media information, tools to deconstruct fake news, rumours and conspiracy theories, ethical issues and engagement with media, Global Citizenship Education and strengthen their understanding on information and media literacy.
It promotes active teaching and learning methods involving learners and educators in the implementation, monitoring & evaluation stages of these programmes.
The E2D programme largely focuses on soft skills, in line with many attributes of 21st-century competencies and transcends barriers and borders such as language, geography and gender.
It is a new ideal for today’s world – a world moving towards an information literate globalised community, requiring young people to be more knowledgeable and responsible in media than in the past

Objectives
- Enhancing the Media and Information literacy of different youth communities in Sri Lanka.
- Enabling youth to acquire knowledge and tools required to measure and evaluate news, stories and other information.
- Creating awareness of fake news, misinformation, different types of hate speech and conspiracy theories and their impact.
- Developing the critical skills needed in order to deconstruct and analyse information.
- Minimizing the spread of misinformation and its negative impact by creating a network of youth who are Critical Media Literate.
- Creating awareness of different ethnicities, religions and building the foundation for a generation of open-minded global citizens.
- Introducing the theories of GCED, peaceful resolution and therefore cultivating a culture of peace through tolerance and respect towards each other in the cyber and media space.
